Older adults face challenges that significantly their risk for developing depression. As we age, the risk of chronic illness, pain and disability increases; these are linked to depression. The older years of life involve major transitions and significant losses that erode our support system and sense of identity. While retirement is inevitable, it can result in the loss of one's professional identity, daily structure and social connections, leading to feelings of being no longer valued. Many older people become full-time caregivers for a spouse with a chronic condition like dementia. This is usually overwhelming and increases the caregiver's risk of depression.
