A Briton who was charged with molesting a woman in Clark Quay was acquitted of the charge after he ‘compensated’ the victim with cash.
Patrick Cormak Cusack, an engineer with a multinational corporation, apologised to the 29-year-old woman for causing her hurt and distress for the incident and paid her $5000 to compound the offence.
However, the 39-year-old was fined S$2000 for a second charge of hurling abuses at a police officer, Staff Sergeant Nazri Ahmad, who tried to arrest him for the incident on 1st May.
The court heard that Cusack’s, who is here for training, had consumed some alcohol during the time of the offence.
In mitigation, Cusack’s lawyer added that his client had since apologised to the officer and had “learnt a difficult lesson”.
Last year Jul, a doctor from India, Dr Thiyagarajan Mathimaran, was charged in court for molesting a woman at a staff toilet. He was attached to CGH’s Urology department at that time. He was later cleared of the charge after he paid $5,000 to the woman he allegedly molested.
In Feb this year, an Australian accused of molestation was also acquitted by the Court. James Anthony Woodburn, a PR, was accused of grabbing the breast of a 26-year-old woman in the shopping area of Marine Bay Sands (MBS). He was allowed to compound the case after he made an apology and paid $10,000 to the woman.
In Jan, a Ukrainian national working as sales manager in Singapore also had his case acquitted after he paid the victim $10,000 to compound the 3 molest charges he was facing. He allegedly groped a Singapore Airlines stewardess’ buttocks and breasts on three occasions on a flight from Moscow to Singapore in Nov last year. He also made an apology in Court.
Meanwhile, on the same day the Ukrainian was acquitted, a Singaporean cab driver was sentenced to two weeks jail for molesting his neighbour’s maid. His case was not compounded.

* Molestation is a compoundable offence if the victim and the AGC agree.
