1. It is based upon archeological evidences that Human Civilization began in the Middle East - Mesopotamia. Equally based upon such evidences, that region millennia ago were NOT deserts, but as lush and fertile valleys as current S.E Asia region is.
2. Being lush and fertile valleys, most are living in a Paradise, with shelter, food and water in abundance.
3. However, crossing rivers were dangerous, as the knowledge to stay afloat, let alone swimming styles were never realized in the ancient world....
4. It is THROUGH OBSERVATION over time, that Humankind progresses. Take the example of a newborn child. It cries when they are hungry or in pain. Within months, they OBSERVED that if they cry out loudly, they would get what they want from loving parents, the way some adults do the same even today to governments.
While our ancient ancestors were not able to cross rivers, they - given the gift of life as well as INTELLIGENCE to realize realities - see, touch, taste, smell, hear, soon observed that trees that they had cut down and turn into shelters, heavy as such was, could FLOAT on water.
They then tried sitting on those tree trunks and realized that they could also float, and eventually, using the same wood, they could paddle the wood trunk to the direction that they wanted......and the rest is history.
5. The Meditteranean People, known as the Minoans and Mycenaeans, were the forerunners of the ancient Greeks.
NECESSITY is the mother of invention, held true even today. They lived in relatively small islands and have limited resources and thus thru the observations of the floating tree trunks, were the original inventors of boats, or sampans back then, which EVOLVED into the Trireme styled ships, for trade, and eventually conquest with the neighboring countries surrounding the Meditteranean Sea
6. Romans ( descendants of Greeks) and the Phoenicians (the predecessors of the the Egyptian and Arab Race), learnt such evolutionary methods to develop their own means to travel the seas. And perhaps thanks to the Great Alexander, such technology was shared to the Indians and Persians whom lived in lush and fertile but land-locked valleys when he conquered Persia and India.
7. At the same time, centuries BC, Polynesians such as the current Malays, Indians, Indonesians, thru observations of the floating wood, equally develop boats/sampans of their own, but living in a HUGE lush and fertile valleys, they had little need for trade, except small sampans to traverse across rivers and thus, their shipbuilding evolution stopped at that stage, UNTIL the Indians in the 7th century, migrated into Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia, forming the Chola and Srivijaya empires.
8. As trade increased, better vessels were necessary to bring vast amounts of goods, such as heavy gold and silver, and thus, thru Observation and NECESSITY BEING THE MOTHER OF INVENTION, the European Civilization began experimenting with bigger ships and with the discovery of the steam engine by the 18th century, the rest is history........
