$4.4 million budgeted for Singapore Day 2014 in London

Singaporeans and their guests enjoying the food on Singapore Day in London on March 29, 2014.

A total of $4.4 million was committed for last month's Singapore Day celebrations in London, attended by more than 9,000 people.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said the total expenditure is still being finalised, but "should be close to the budgeted amount".

He cited the details in a written parliamentary answer on Monday to Nominated MP Faizah Jamal. She had asked about the cost, the number of people flown from Singapore for the March 29 event at Victoria Park, and ensuring future events use eco-friendly, non-disposable wares.

The celebration has been held in a major city almost every year since 2007 to gather overseas Singaporeans and give them a taste of home, from hawker fare to home-grown entertainment.

If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.

Waste of taxpayers' money. Surely can channel it towards something meaningful.

From the pappies' perspective, it is not a waste of money. When they are spending a lot of money with seemingly no tangible financial returns, you can bet that they have an ulterior motive. See the annual NDP.

Remember, they are bean counters and penny pinchers. They would typically not do something that's against their nature. But when they do, watch out.

No different from Vote Buying .... abuse taxpayers money to buy votes for PAP!

It's money well spent as it is a good investment for the long term future of the country.

Better to spent 4.4 million wayang wayang let the world see than to help the poor and needy when nobody can notice.

From NKF website:

The cost of one dialysis session is S$130 and in a week, patients need 3 sessions. So that works out to be about S$1,690 a month. NKF subsidizes financially strapped patients and reduces their bill. More than 50% of dialysis patients pay S$50 or less for each dialysis session. That’s excluding the transport cost to the dialysis centres as some of these patients are immobile.

Based on this number 217 dialysis patients can get their treatment free for the whole year if this $4.4 million was used for dialysis treatment. Song boh?
$1690 per month X 12 months = $20280
4400000/20280 = 217.

Spend $4.4 million to feed 10000 govt scholars in London is worth it? This government really does not have a conscience.
