Very often when someone mentions the high income inequality in Singapore, more often than not, the PAP leaders will say this is not that important because there is social mobility in Singapore.

So over time you after listening to them you get the impression that social mobility is especially high in Singapore to counter the high income gap.

Nothing is further from the truth. Look at the Gatsby Curve, the vertical axis measures social immobilty and the horizonal axis measure level of inequality....higher on y-axis means lower social mobility.

Singapore actually suffers both high income inequality and low social mobility. Countries like Finland and german y. have far lower inequality and much higher social mobility. This means what the PAP tells is not true, the chance of poor people climbing up to a better life is among lowest in developed countries and our inequality is highest in developed countries. Only counry as comparable to singapore is USA. However, in US the population is divided into rural and urban, lower income folks live in rural areas where the cost of living also much lower...so the effects of inequality is very much reduced. .social mbility is limited by geography if your are in the farmlands you tend to stay tgere...but in Singapore everyone is living within a very small area so the inequality is concentrated and the lack of social mobility more pronounced if the effects of geography is taken out of US data.

In order words , singapore's. third world wage structure has produced the most unequal society in the developed world and this inequality is certain to get worse due to low social mobility

If a poor son of a divorcee to can rise to the post of Minister, it shows that social mobility is excellent in Singapore.

That is called an exception ...1 in 2,000,000

If a person is exceptional, they will rise to the top. That's what mobility is all about.

If everyone could rise to the top, it would mean there is something seriously wrong with the system. It would be like an exam where everyone who sat scored straight As.

A system build for exceptions will only be supported by exceptional pple.

mobility is not simply about rising to the very top. its about rising above the station you were born into.

mobility allows:
1. the poor to rise to middle or top income
2. the middle to rise to the top or fall down to poor
3. the top to fall down to middle or poor

now the top are entrenched and hardly fall. only exceptional people rise. the middle are trapped.

its little wonder the government is losing share of the popular vote.

A significant factor is because they have ceased giving us back OUR hard-earned CPF money at age 55 !!

The only limit to anyone's potential is imposed by their own abilities and ambitions. The government does not control the lives of individuals. The opportunities are there for everyone.

If you want to succeed, you will. If you think you're trapped, it's self fulfilling.

positive thinking aside, society is pyramid shaped, correct? or perhaps more of a diamond these days. mathematically speaking, the area at the top is limited. and when any structure becomes top heavy, it'll topple.

things like religion and the caste system help to maintain the shape of society. with unbridled capitalism sweeping aside the former pillars of society, we are nearing an increasingly unstable point in the cycle.

in a nut shell, society is increasingly amoral. i cannot prove it, but the downfall of civilizations is linked to its moral thermometer. i am a novice, i have little more to add.

I hope the inequality you mentioned gets worse and worse....

The problem with societies nowadays is that people are fed false hope.

If stupid people were told, at an early age, how stupid they were, they would quickly learn where their station is in life.

you get nowhere by telling people what to believe these days. you'd be better off with a society of robots that way.

you can't just feed them alcohol and TV to keep them happy anymore.
