Do you get as much bruises learning Thai boxing compared to TKD ?

How effective is Thai boxing ? They should have a competition where Thai boxing can fight TKD or Karate can fight Ip Man.

Depends on what you mean by 'effective'. Fighting in a ring (tkd, boxing, BJJ, MMA, judo, etc) with rules, some random brawl in the train/streets, or fending off a robber?

Some years ago, a punk tried to rob me while I was on holiday. I put him down on the ground before he realized it using Aikido, a martial arts whose effectiveness on the streets or the ring had been debated intensely, often with great scepticism. I don't know how my martial arts would rank, but I just need it for self defence. Enough to keep me alive, and if possible, neutralize my opponent within seconds. I am not into ring fighting or going 10 rounds with my opponent.

So before you pick your training arts, you should decide what you want it for - keeping fit, ring fighting, self defence, a mixture those reasons. Ultimately, what you get depends a lot of how much effort you put into your training.

It gave me tremendous pride to use Japanese martial arts to put down the PRC robber punk.

Boxing. Hit the bengs hard and fast. Just one good knock, and the beng goes down. Spend some time at the gym. People are less likely to start fights with someone who have a bigger and muscular build.

You cannot fight for shit you nigger. Your fighting style is your face to enemy's fist.

People who started fights with me in real life like to think that way. I deliberately encourage such behaviour because it usually allows me to put them on the ground faster.

There are already so many avenues for the various martial artists to challenge each other. Glory series, bellator, UFC, OneFC, etc etc .. too many to mention.
Thai boxing has done pretty well so far against most other martial arts. However, like all stand up arts, it is not complete. Proven most effective are stand up arts + grappling. Eg. Muay Thai + brazillian jiujitsu, boxing + brazillian jiujitsu. Some other combinations have also enjoyed limited success. eg boxing + judo . Those doing purely TKD, kung fu or even karate have not been successful at all unless they have other skillsets like brazillian jiujitsu, wrestling, boxing. Just google in youtube and you'll find many such matches

There is this variant of Thai Boxing known as Muay Boran. Very few practitioners and i suspect it is a dying art. I had the chance to exchange pointers with a Thai master before and what surprised me was that instead of the swift and point-gathering attacks of muay thai, it has elements of tai chi. Think of it is a less-than-lethal form of martial art for disarming and throwing wannabe attackers off.

Those martial arts and their current training is more geared towards ring fighting and unarmed combat.

If you plan to train for self-defence like what I do, you should train in a martial arts or a mixture that includes weapons, such as using of a short weapon, disarming of opponents with firearms.
