Medically determining your heart rate zones (Zone 1–5) involves physiological testing, specifically a Lactate Threshold Test or VO₂ Max Test, performed by sports doctors, exercise physiologists, or specialized sports labs. These tests measure blood lactate levels or oxygen consumption at various intensities.
Here are the locations in Singapore where you can get this testing:
Specialized Sports Medicine & Performance Labs
Singapore Sport and Exercise Medicine Centre @ CGH (SSMC): Offers professional VO₂ max, Lactate Threshold, and treadmill/cycling tests for performance enhancement and fitness assessments.
Coached (Performance Lab): Conducts VO₂ max and lactate threshold tests (running or cycling) to determine training zones, priced from $229–$250.
DexaFit Singapore: Specializes in VO₂ max testing for cardiovascular fitness and longevity.
Strength Clinic Academy: Provides metabolic screening and VO₂ max testing for zone training.
Sports and Healthy Ageing Lab (ALLSET): Offers VO₂ Max and Lactate Threshold tests.
Apex Sports Clinic: Offers VO₂ Max testing (from $250) and Lactate Threshold tests (from $200).
Clifford Clinic (Singapore): Offers Lactate Threshold Tests to measure lactate inflection points (LIP) for setting training zones.
What to Expect
The Test: A treadmill or stationary bike test where you start at a low intensity and increase every 4–5 minutes.
Methodology: Technicians will prick your finger (lactate test) or use a mask (VO₂ test) to measure your threshold points.
Results: You will receive a detailed report outlining your heart rate (BPM) or power (watts) for each of the 5 zones.
Important Considerations
Health Check: If you are a beginner or have health concerns, you should consult a GP or Sports Medicine Physician before the test.
Pre-test Prep: Avoid strenuous exercise and caffeine 24 hours prior.
