I've eaten at chicken rice stalls where the chicken and rice were separated, but never encountered a similar problem.

Just say you want $3 or $4, which chicken part you want, steamed or roasted, any special add-ons etc and everything else is routine.

The soup at some chicken rice stalls is also surprisingly good. You can find corn, carrots, red dates etc. It's not just a clear, diluted broth of MSG.
