When was Singapore actually founded and by whom still remains a subject without much indepth study and investigation.
All along we are made to believe that the founder was Sir Stamford raffles, an officer with the British East India company. In his memory so many places are named - roads, buldings, schools and many other entertainment joints.
In actual fact Temasek (Singapore) was founded by a Sri Vijayan Hindu prince from Palembang, Indonesia. His name was Sang Nila Utama. This was in the year 1324, about 500 years before Raffles laid claim to this Malay-dominated fishing village and took over its control from Sultan Hussein Mu'azzam Shah of Johor after agreeing to pay the latter a stipend.
Sang Nila Utama took control of the kingdoms consisting of Singapura, Bintan and Palembang. He was known as Sri Maharaja Sang Utama Parameswara Batara Sri Tri Buana. The name Singapura came from the ancient Sanskrit word of Singa (lion) and Pura (city). According to legends Sang Nila Utama saw this beast after landing close to the mouth of the Singapore River.
There was once a school in Aljunied Road dedicated to these prince. The school is no more in existence. The building is now used as a Gurkha Contingent camp. Sadly, no road, public estate or buildings are named after this founder of the isle of the "white-beaches of Temasek" (old name of Singapore). What happened to him or his descendants is a mystery.
So much is mentioned of Raffles and the British and nothing about this original founder. We have places named after historic people and places, Clive, Dalhousie, Hastings, Dunman, Bencoolen, Bendemeer and the list goes on. But nothing is dedicated to Sang Nila Utama.
Why are we naming schools and places after politicians like Rajaratnam, Goh Keng Swee and Lee Kuan Yew?
I propose that we name a new highway, housing estate or future development after Sang Nila Utama.
Forummers what do you think. Please contribute. Thank you ::*:)

We are trying to erase the memory and it's not a bad thing. I won't want to see Indonesia make any ownership claim to this country.

What has he done? Build roads? Build schools? Only use a mouth.

i thot temasek is used extensively to show correlation to time /era before Raffles?

Yah, sang nila utama first landed here but what else did he do? Raffles saw our potential and phyiscally made efforts to develop us.

its like, we know Christopher Columbus found America but George Washington is held in higher reverence.

Singapore want to eradicate any malay influence on the island.
notice how pinoys are now slowly but surely replacing the singapore malays in the employment sector.
the malay kampung land was the first to be acquired by the govenrment and replaced with HDB flats.
The Al-Juneid area was a kampung many years ago although the descendents were arab/ malays.
The malays were originally the majority in the police and army, but today, they are barred from higher positions, so no point joining the "force".
Same with civil service and politics. malays cannot be appointed for some positions or only up to certain hiearchy.

How do you explain lion dance then..:D

From wikipedia:
Chinese guardian lions, known also as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, or stone lions (石獅, Pinyin: Shíshī) in Chinese art and often (incorrectly) called "Foo Dogs" in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. They are believed to have powerful mythic protective powers that has traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance, in China and in other places around the world where the Chinese people have immigrated and settled, especially in local Chinatowns.

The lions are always created in pairs, with the male holding the world in his hand and the female with holding a cub. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations.[1]

This answer you question!

I still have lots of respects for the Malay race for its politeness and contentedness.
The Malays were good policemen and got along well with their fellow colleagues and community.
Lt Adnan of Pasir Panjang Battle is well known by the people.
Bukit Kepong Incident in Malaysia is also another unforgettable.
Malays have won many Gallantry Awards in our Police and Army.
Yusof Ishak was one Great Leader.
Tun Sri Lanang, Hang Tuah and Tengku Abdul Rahman have many admirers.
The Pinoys and Pinays are a world of a difference from the wonderful Malays. No comparison.
The Malays will still fight for Singapore, whereas the Pinoys and Pinays will disaapear from the face of Singapore.

I'd love to see Indonesia claim to be the successor state to the Sri Vijaya Empire. The most immediate effect would probably be that all the current Indonesian provinces that were NOT part of the core Sri Vijaya (West Papua, parts of Eastern Java, all the eastern islands and Kalimantan) would seek autonomy and/or independence. That would really be fun.

We are trying to erase the memory and it's not a bad thing. I won't want to see Indonesia make any ownership claim to this country.
