A rat infestation in Hougang is alarming residents, with the rodents reportedly feeding on food scraps, entering lifts, scurrying over residents' feet, and frightening young children and the elderly.
Ms Guo, a 42-year-old resident, told Shin Min Daily News that the rat infestation has been an ongoing problem at Blocks 627 to 629, Hougang Avenue 8.
"Every time my daughter and I pass by downstairs, we are terrified. Our biggest fear is seeing rats," she said.
Ms Guo added that rats often appear at night, scurrying everywhere and, on one occasion, even crawled over her daughter's feet.
When a Shin Min reporter visited the area, nearby residents echoed her concerns.
Ms Shen recounted spotting a rat in the lift which scurried out just as she was about to enter.
"The rat was so fat and big and it rushed towards me. It was really disgusting," she said.
He added that the rubbish bin area is also often overflowing with rubbish, which he believes is a key contributor to the ongoing rat infestation.
Several rat holes were seen on a grass patch. One rat, seen feeding on food scraps, was measured to be around 20cm long.
This issue has left residents uneasy, with many concerned about the potential spread of germs and disease.
Its team will also inspect surrounding garbage chutes and drainage areas to eliminate food sources and nesting spot, implementing necessary measures to control the infestation.
"Residents are urged to dispose of food waste properly as this is crucial to keeping the environment clean and preventing pests," said the spokesperson.
