The long awaited Watopia expansion is here, and it's our most detailed area yet! The 10+km of new roads will take you through an alpine prairie on your way into the Watopia jungle containing some mysterious forgotten ruins.

But hang on, there's a catch! Not just anybody can ride this new expansion - Zwifters must earn it. You must be level 10 or higher, in any sport, to enter.

While we understand this may annoy some at first glance, we believe (and hope!) this will give Zwifters even more incentive to hop on their trainers or treadmills and crank out some miles with something so big to chase after. If the idea still bugs you, don't worry - we made it an easily attainable level so the reward is not too far away.

Additionally, anybody who joins a scheduled group ride that takes place on a Level 10 locked route will be able to ride with the group regardless of their level. We will start scheduling events on the expansion in a day or two.

We've also made a few fixes and improvements, like:

  • Cycleops Hammer/Magnus spindown calibration is now supported over built-in bluetooth on Mac and iOS. Support for this via ZML bluetooth bridge is still in the works.
  • Group workouts algorithm changed to reduce the speed of the group so it is more reasonable
  • Dirt road dust effect reduced in large packs of riders
  • Made changes to allow for reduced download size of all future updates
  • Fixed Brick activities (Bike, then Run). They now save as two activities of the correct sport
  • "Ride with..." or "Run with..." should be more reliable now
  • Many small bugs fixed
We'd normally hint at some of the cool things in the works at Zwift HQ (and there are many), but after today's release we'll keep those secret for now and just let everybody enjoy the new expansion, or get to work earning it!

As usual we're all ears when it comes to suggestions or feedback about changes, and a good way to do that is via our Zwift Support Community.

Ride On.

Watopia is a virtual island of the virtual cycling software Zwift, situated in the Pacific Oceanon the islands of Te Anu and Naunonga, part of the Solomon Islands archipelago. Watopia is one of 3 courses available on Zwift, alongside Richmond and London. Watopia is the most frequent course on the Zwift Course Schedule, being active 15-19 days per month.

Watopia consists of a fictional cycling course (roads), including a hilly climb, a volcano and, since March 2016, a mountain climb that is situated on the peninsula part of Naunonga. The total course is approximately 34.5 km in length.

I finally know what's more pointless than virtual golf

Virtual cycling is actually far better than real cycling if you're doing it primarily for health and fitness.

It offers an even harder workout than riding in the real world but removes pretty much ALL the hazards that riding in traffic entails.

I now ride 6 days a week but brave the traffic only on weekends and that's for the social interaction that group riding brings. The other 4 days are Zwift days.

I have a sufferfest account to and I'll do a sufferfest ride when I feel like really hurting myself.

Same argument for VR sex I guess

Just curious.. what is the set up like? Obviously you need a speedometer. What about climbs and downhills?

You need a smart trainer which is paired via bluetooth to the Zwift app.

The app then controls the effort required to pedal so when the virtual terrain is uphill you have to struggle to maintain a decent pace.

When you go downhill spinning the pedals is effortless just as is the case in the real world.

How fast you can go in the virtual world all depends upon how many watts you can churn out. The smart trainder measures this wattage and transmits it to the app which in turn provides the reading to the zwift servers which convert your wattage into speed on the road. It mimics are real bike race very well and is quite addictive.

It is definitely far more realistic than virtual golf which I have tried too.
