UGL win $600m Singapore Hub contract

Engineering and facilities management company UGL Ltd says it has finalised a $600 million public-private partnership with Singapore Sports Council to maintain the Singapore Sports Hub.

The 25 year contract is for facilities management of the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the remaining greenfield Singapore Sports Hub venues, which are due for completion in 2014.

UGL is part of the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium, also comprising HSBC, Dragages and Global Spectrum, who were successful in winning the contract for development and maintenance.

UGL's services contract covers planned and preventative maintenance services, lifecycle services, cleaning, security, estate management, helpdesk, utilities and car parking management.

UGL chief executive Richard Leupen said the win supported UGL's growing end-to-end property services capability across the Asia-Pacific region.

"This long-term partnership will provide a strong and expanding revenue base for our property services business," he said.

It's ok to ask where is our reserves, but not ok to accuse him of "squandering"! Certain words are very sensitive now in Sinkieland and must be used with caution to avoid going down to the canine club for coffee! Esp. words like "burn", "con/cheat/squander" etc.

WSG confirm they are exploring a huge event for the April 2014 opening

SINGAPORE - After the success of the first Youth Olympic Games, which ended last night with the closing ceremony at the Float@Marina Bay, sport in the Republic received a further boost early yesterday morning when the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) finally announced they had signed the deal with the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium (SSHC) to build the new Sports Hub at Kallang, where the 37-year-old National Stadium currently sits.

The consortium had been awarded the tender in January 2008, the contract was supposed to be signed two months later, but work was delayed due to the global financial crisis.

Initially slated to open at the end of next year, the Sports Hub will now be ready for operations in April 2014.

The main feature of the Sports Hub will be the new 55,000-capacity National Stadium with a retractable roof and retractable seating, and many will expect SSHC to put on a world-class opening act at the facility to wow the country.

World Sport Group (WSG), one of the main partners of the consortium, are planning an annual calendar of events for the Sports Hub to keep the facility buzzing with activity.

When contacted yesterday, WSG chief operating officer Andrew Georgiou revealed there are plans for an opening event that fits the scale of the project.

"That is definitely not going to be discussed now. That is going to be a surprise, it is going to be a big surprise," Georgiou promised.

"We've got a number of ideas we are tossing around and working with the SSC on this, but I can assure you the opening of the stadium is something to look forward to."

The current National Stadium will be torn down in October and the price of construction of the Sports Hub is estimated at $1.33 billion.

The new stadium will be able to host football and cricket matches, track and field and rugby events, as well as concerts and National Day Parades.

Besides the main stadium, the Sports Hub will also feature an aquatic centre with Olympic swimming and diving facilities as well as leisure components, a 3,000-capacity multi-purpose arena, a watersports centre, a sports library, sports museum and exhibition space and 41,000sqm of retail, restaurants and entertainment space.

The new stadium will feature a cooling system that will keep fans on the individual seats comfortable. The 20,000 seats closest to the bottom of the arena can also be brought forward over the running track right up to the edge of the field during football matches, for example, to bring fans closer to the action.

The movable tier seating system means the stadium can also be configured for cricket and rugby matches.

The Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, described the Sports Hub as the "missing piece in the jigsaw".

"By 2014, we will have an outstanding stadium, including of course, swimming, indoor arena and all the other ancillary services. I think we are in a very nice position. In fact, a very good position. The next few years, the next decade in sports will be an exciting time," said Dr Balakrishnan yesterday.

In 2008, WSG revealed they were planning an Asean football club league.

COO Georgiou confirmed that football will be the key driver in their plans for a slew of international, regional and local-level events at the Sports Hub.

"There is no doubt that football is going to be a focus of the event calendar. You will agree and Singaporeans will agree that nothing gets the passionate juices flowing more than football," Georgiou said.

"We've seen the success of the Suzuki Cup and the passion of the people that attend these events.

"One of the challenges we need to do is to create a seasonality in the events schedule, where people know what to expect at the same time every year."
