A father and son who ran away from their village during the Vietnamese war 40 years ago were allegedly found living in a treehouse in a remote jungle on Thursday (August 8), state media reports said.

The pair had survived without contact with the outside world, eating wild rice and foraging for fruit and vegetables, Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV said.

Reuters can not independently verify the authenticity of the report or claims.

Ho Van Thanh fled from Tra Kem village in fear with two-year-old Ho Van Lang after a mine exploded killing his wife and two other sons, according to local media.

Thanh made a den in the trees and the two reportedly wore loincloths made out of tree bark.

Reports said villagers chopping firewood raised the alarm after spotting two "jungle men".

Thanh, 82, and 41-year-old Lang were found after a five-hour search and are now having full medical check-ups said VTV.

According to media reports, officials in Quang Ngai province said Thanh speaks a small amount of the local dialect but his son knows only odd words.

Reports said attempts will now be made to slowly reintegrate them back into society.
