Erdogan had allegedly betrayed Putin by secretly providing military aid to Ukraine, despite their previous alliance, which was forged when Putin had helped Erdogan evade an assassination attempt. Additionally, Erdogan had assisted the Islamist group HTS in overthrowing the Syrian government.
