I got stung with one of these when I was 8yo, just arrived from England a few weeks earlier. I was at the beach with the kid next door, who was a couple of years older, and of course he’d gone off with his mates. I had no idea what to do, I’d never felt such pain. The tail was wrapped around & around my leg, from ankle to knee. A couple of Aussie girls about my own age saw my distress and made me sit while they covered my leg in sand to dislodge it. Then they took me to the first-aid station, but told me on the way that I needed to start crying otherwise the first-aid ppl wouldn’t do anything. I think I was kind of in shock at the time, and I’ve never been someone who could cry on demand. Sure enough, the first-aid ppl just took the “yeah, you’ll be fine, off you go” approach. I started to walk home, but by this stage I could barely walk. A lovely lady saw me, found out what the problem was, picked me up and literally carried me home (a few streets away). She called a doctor for me.Imagine my poor mum getting home from work, finding me a strange lady in our flat, plus a doctor! I’m 66yo now but will never forget the kindness of those young girls and that lady. But I’d like to have a word or two with those first-aid gentlemen who wouldn’t do anything to help a child who’d been stung because she wasn’t actually crying at the time.
