Veteran Hong Kong actor and film director Stanley Fung Shui-fan, 81, has passed away in Taiwan in the wee hours of Nov. 1, 2025.

According to Hong Kong news media outlet Hong Kong Economic Times (HKET), news of Fung's passing first surfaced after New Taipei City Councillor Tsai Shu-chun shared the announcement on her Facebook page.

Fung's death comes just days after the passing of his longtime friend and fellow actor Benz Hui, who died on Oct. 28.

Following Hui's death, Fung had expressed his sorrow on social media, writing, "It saddens me that he truly left before I did, leaving a faint feeling of melancholy."

He ended the message off by saying, "Dear brother, wait for me over there. I'll follow soon."

Beloved figure in Hong Kong cinema

According to HKET, Fung had lived in Taiwan for over 30 years and had stepped away from the entertainment industry in recent times.

His last film role was in the Taiwanese horror film "Them, Behind the Door", also known as "Hu Die Da Shia", which was released in Taiwan in 2024.

Fung was a prominent figure in Hong Kong's film and television industry from the 1970s through the 1990s.

He earned widespread recognition for his iconic comedic roles, such as "Rhino Skin" in the "Lucky Stars" series and "Lau Ting-kin" in "The Romancing Star".

Had been hospitalised for two months

Local news media outlet HK01 reported that in May this year, Fung was hospitalised for two months due to illness.

He shared a photo of himself on social media, showing him hooked up to an oxygen concentrator.

He stated that he had just been discharged from the hospital and admitted that he was not fully recovered.
