Deaths, injuries in lorry accidents have ‘generally decreased’ since 2010 but fatality rate up in past 2 years: LTA

Recent fatalities involving migrant workers being ferried on the back of lorries have raised fresh calls for the practice to be stopped.

SINGAPORE — The number of deaths and injuries in accidents involving people ferried on the back of lorries has “generally decreased” since the introduction of more stringent precautions more than a decade ago, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Friday (May 7).

However, some figures and charts provided by LTA indicated that the total number of deaths involving lorry accidents, and the number of deaths per 1,000 lorries on the road, have been rising in the past couple of years.

The authority was responding to media queries after two recent accidents involving lorries carrying migrant workers left two people dead and more than 20 injured.

17 people, including 5 police officers, injured after accident between police van and lorry

SINGAPORE — Seventeen people, including five police officers, were taken to hospital on Friday night (May 7) after an accident between a police van and a lorry in Jurong.

The police said they were alerted to the accident at the junction of Jalan Buroh and Jurong Port Road at about 9pm.

"Five police officers, one male lorry driver and 11 male lorry passengers were conscious when conveyed to hospital," said the police in response to CNA's queries.

"The 17 men, aged 20 to 44, all sustained minor injuries. Police investigations are ongoing."

A video circulating on social media shows the lorry's shattered windscreen and pieces of glass on the road. The left side of the police van also appears badly damaged.

Some people could be seen getting medical treatment on the pavement, with at least two Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulances at the scene.

If workers were allowed to use PMDs to get to work everyone would be far safer.

Data are not confusing.

in Statistics it is called smoothing the Data.

in other words if u take a 50 years average ,
Road Traffic Accidents in any year will look insignificant.

"More people voted PAP than ever before."
