At around 6:20 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 10, the Wild Twisters thrill ride at the popular Ocean Park was suspended due to a signal failure, leaving the 17 passengers on board trapped in the air for over an hour, according to a statement from the park.
“The safety protection system of the Wild Twister ride was activated at 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 10 due to a failure signal detected, and the ride was suspended,” Ocean Park explained. “With the assistance of the Fire Services Department, ride operators escorted passengers to exit the ride at 7:37 p.m.”
All 17 passengers on the ride were safely rescued by 8:07 p.m. with no injuries reported, per the statement.
In scary footage of the incident, passengers are seen strapped in their seats and stranded high in the air on the windmill-style ride — which is supposed to spin around — as the attraction remains stand-still.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said that the malfunction was caused by “sensor malfunction signals that triggered the ride's safety system to suspend the operation,” per the Associated Press.
“EMSD has requested that Ocean Park conduct a detailed investigation and reopen it only after confirming safety by the competent person of the amusement ride and upon inspection by EMSD officers,” the department told the outlet.
