USA indicts 5 Chinese military officials for espionage

The United States is preparing to announce first-of-its-kind criminal charges Monday against Chinese military officials in an international cyberspying case, a government official said.

Attorney General Eric Holder and other federal law enforcement officials were expected to reveal the new indictments later Monday, the official told The Associated Press.

The indictments will accuse individuals of participating in cyber-espionage on behalf of a foreign government, said the official, who revealed this information only on grounds of anonymity because this person wasn't authorized to publicly discuss the case in advance of the official announcement.
The official described the prosecution as unprecedented.

The United States has brought first-of-its kind cyber-espionage charges against five Chinese military officials accused of hacking into U.S. companies to gain trade secrets.

The indictment accuses the hackers of targeting the U.S. nuclear power, metals and solar products industries. The alleged victims are brand-name companies including Alcoa and Westinghouse.

The indictment includes allegations of trade secret theft and economic espionage.

It is a pointless gesture.

If you are holding a senior position in the military, you will need special permission to travel out of the country for a private vacation. Travelling to the US and most other Western countries for a holiday will certainly be out of the question. I know because I have friends whose parents are in the Chinese military and they are unable to travel out of the country easily.

The US is really trying to divert attention away from the fact that they have been spying on everyone for the past many years. Imagine all the important research and confidential company secrets stolen from other countries. I can only imagine where they all end up, very probably somewhere in silicon valley with some "Harvard dropout?"

Nearly all state security personal of certain ranks and security clearance must seek permission before they travel overseas. Its nothing new and pretty much the operating rule all over the world.

This new approach of identifying individuals rather than the State in state sponsored illegal activities is more effective. Many of them have kids and relatives studying in the US. It immediately curtails their activities. Also they will be scared of travelling to countries where the US has extradition treaties. If they are important and influential state operators and there are enough in numbers named, they will pressurise their govt to change.

Even if they are stoic, their own families will exert pressure as they named and shamed in public.

This method was copied from sanctions and money laundering enforcement actions that banks had to apply. Funds and assets frozen. When this approach was applied to the Russian elite during the recent Ukraine Crisis, despite talking big, the Russians quickly stopped their nonsense.

Imagine you are named and shamed, movement restricted and your political bosses are visiting their kids in the US for the holidays. You must be a fool when there is no personal gain.
