One dead, 3 slashed in knife attacks

Body found in Kallang; another victim loses some fingers

A MAN was murdered and a teenager had a few of his fingers hacked off in multiple violent attacks that took place in the Kallang area early yesterday morning.
The four incidents – clustered within a 2km-wide zone – were reported to the police over a span of seven hours from midnight yesterday. In all the cases, the victims were slashed.
At 7.30am, the body of a man with visible knife wounds to his upper body was found lying in an open field next to a condominium near Kallang MRT station.
Police have yet to determine the identity of the dead man.
In the other three attacks, the victims’ ages ranged between 17 and 44.
It is not known yet whether the four cases are connected. Police spokesman Yvonne Edwin told The Straits Times that they are investigating and ‘have not ruled out any of the possibilities’.
At press time, the police had yet to arrest anyone for any of the four attacks.
Security guards at The Riverine By The Park condominium were alerted to the body of the murdered man by a passer-by. When they approached the field, they saw the body of the slain man in the knee-high grass.
He had been slashed on the head, arms and upper body.
One of the guards, Ms M. Malathy, 34, said: ‘His mouth and his eyes were open… there was blood.’
No identification documents were found on the man, who was wearing a grey shirt, black pants and black shoes.
Neither the guards nor the foreign workers staying on a worksite behind the field – which was about the size of three tennis courts – heard any commotion during the night.
No worker was missing from the worksite, added the site’s safety supervisor P.Vellaiscamy, 41.
Police officers cordoned off the scene and scoured the field for evidence and weapons. Sniffer dogs were also used.
A group of foreign workers crowded near the cordon, eager to learn the identity of the victim. One of them explained that his friend had gone missing for three days, but declined to say more.
Earlier yesterday morning, police had responded to three other attacks within walking distance of where the dead man’s body was found.
At about 12.15am, a 24-year-old man was slashed at Block44 Sims Drive. He suffered multiple cuts to his body, mostly to his head and left arm.
A resident at the block told The Straits Times that the slashing had taken place at the playground at the foot of the block. Blood stains could still be seen yesterday afternoon, when officers returned to make further inquiries among residents.
A 32-year-old resident on the fifth-floor said that he saw a man, whose head was dripping blood, run up the stairs to the fifth floor before taking the lift down again.
Barely 30 minutes after the 12.15 attack, a 44-year-old man was slashed on the hands and head – this time at Kallang MRT station.
At about 7am, police and paramedics responded to another call along the Pan-Island Expressway, near the Sims Avenue exit. There, they found a 17-year-old boy with multiple fractures and a few of his fingers hacked off.
All three are being treated in hospital.
Witnesses to the attacks should call the police on 1800-255-0000.
