SINGAPORE - Unemployment for Singapore citizens and permanent residents crept up in the third quarter of the year amid softer economic conditions, although total employment rose.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate as of end September was 3.1 per cent for citizens and 3 per cent for all residents, up from 2.9 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively three months earlier.

Overall, the rate remained unchanged at 2 per cent, according to preliminary figures released by the Manpower Ministry (MOM) on Thursday .

"MOM and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency stand ready to help displaced local workers to re-skill and upgrade so that they are able to take on new jobs," the ministry said in a statement.

The three months from July to September also saw the number of people employed rise by 16,400 as a result of growth in the services and construction sector. This was an improvement from the 9,700 rise in the previous quarter and the fall of 6,100 in the preceding one.

This brought the total number of people in jobs here to 3,644,000 as at end September.

Firms laid off fewer people for the third consecutive quarter, with 2,900 people losing their jobs from July to September, down from 3,250 in the previous three months.

3% considered very low by global standards.

Because in other countries there are good safety nets and high unemployment is by choice. The people rather not work and use welfare money to buy cigarettes and beer.

3% considered very low by global standards.

If I not wrong, the 3% only consist of jobless within 6 months. In MOM definition, anyone jobless beyond 6 months are not considered keen to work and hence does not fall into these 3%. Not sure if that's the definition still today though.

no worries, can sing and dance the upturn downturn song.:oIo:

A job is easy to get, being a cleaner also means got job but what kind of quality of life do they lead?

yeah true, our country dont have minimum wage, keeping unemployment low is easy when u pay everyone peanuts.offer a decent minimum wage like other first world country,1/3rd of ur gdp per cap and see how fast unemployment goes up.

and the ministars have the cheek to pay themselves obscene salary. the reason that lhl gave was that if not there will be corruption. but no one asked if he knew how the cleaners paid?
