Underwater World supervisor dies after getting stung in chest by a stingray
OCTOBER 5
Mr Chan, a senior staff member at Underwater World Singapore (UWS), died on Tuesday after he was stung in the chest by a stingray while transferring it from its tank. He succumbed to his injuries at Singapore General Hospital.

At the wake, his old scuba diving suit was displayed by the coffin — a reminder of his love for diving, shared his wife, Mdm Serene Tong, 59.
With a smile, she recounted how they had first met when he was a lifeguard at Sentosa and she was working as an administrative staff there. “He was very honest, forthright... We just clicked,” she said.

Mr Chan, a senior supervisor of UWS’ Curatorial Department, was one of the 10 UWS staff who had stayed after the attraction’s closure in late June to help care for the animals while suitable new homes were being found.

The Manpower Ministry has instructed UWS to stop all activities associated with the transferring of sea animals. Investigations are ongoing.
