KUALA LUMPUR:*Malaysian police have arrested UMNO member and chairman of Malay NGOs Jamal Md Yunos on possible sedition charges, his aide said on Friday evening (Sep 25).

The police said Jamal was arrested at 8.50pm at the Ampang Jaya District Police Headquarters under Section 105 of the Penal Code relating to the proposed gathering in Petaling Street on Saturday.*

Jamal was the spokesman for the Red Shirt rally that took place in Kuala Lumpur on Sep 16. He said on Wednesday that Petaling Street in Chinatown could see a riot if authorities failed to take action against traders, who were mostly Chinese, for selling pirated or counterfeit products to tourists.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim had earlier said Jamal would be summoned to the Dang Wangi police headquarters and his statement over the planned rally would be recorded.*

The police said no notice had been filed for any planned rally on Saturday and they would take action if anyone attempted to gather there. *
