Ukraine goes to the polls on Sunday amid an uptick in fighting in the eastern Donbas region, where two Russian-backed republics broke away in 2015. FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg and Jonathan Walsh report.



The frontline separating government-held territory from that controlled by pro-Russian forces has moved little since 2015, but there is fighting almost every day – and has ramped up over recent weeks.
It is in this context that the second round of Ukraine's presidential elections on Sunday pits incumbent Petro Poroshenko against Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian who plays a fictional president on TV.

“They say I was meddling in the election — ridiculous — but that’s their spin,” he said.
Mr. Giuliani said on Thursday that he had hoped to meet in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, with the nation’s president-elect and urge him to pursue inquiries that could yield new information about two matters of intense interest to Mr. Trump. One is the origin of the special counsel’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. The other is the involvement of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s son in a gas company owned by a Ukrainian oligarch.

Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat who serves on the Foreign Relations Committee, sent a letter to the panel’s Republican chairman asking for an investigation of Mr. Giuliani’s activities. Late last year, a court in Ukraine faulted Mr. Leshchenko for calling attention in 2016 to documents related to the work in Ukraine of Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman at the time, Paul Manafort. The documents, which were first published in The New York Times, led to the resignation from the campaign of Mr. Manafort, who has since pleaded guilty to charges brought by the special counsel related to his work in Ukraine, and is serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Mr. Giuliani has called for additional inquiry into Mr. Leshchenko’s scrutiny of Mr. Manafort.
