Uefa informed of irregular betting patterns on recent Airtricity Premier Division match

League encounter between Shelbourne and Monaghan United in Irish top flight is under investigation after unusual betting trends emerged

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed on Tuesday that Uefa had been made aware of irregular betting patterns on a recent Airtricity Premier Division match.

Monaghan United's defeat to Shelbourne on May 4 is the game in question. It is understood that a number of large bets were placed on the likelihood of a penalty being awarded at Tolka Park.

Shels won the game 2-1 with goals from Paddy Kavanagh and David Cassidy after Monaghan took an early lead with a Willo McDonagh penalty.

Both managers, Shelbourne's Alan Mathews and Mons' Roddy Collins, were told in advance by Airtricity League Director Fran Gavin of the unusual betting patterns.

An FAI spokesman told Goalcom: "The FAI has informed UEFA of the allegations surrounding unusual betting patterns at a recent league game.

This is standard practice when such matters occasionally arise. The FAI legal department will continue to monitor the situation."
