SINGAPORE: Two teenage girls were killed when the car they were in crashed into a tree at Tampines Road early Thursday.
Eighteen-year-old Republic Polytechnic (RP) student Michelle Phoe and Phoebe Lo, 19, who were in the rear passenger seats of the white Toyota, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Police were called to the crash scene at about 6.20am and the driver, 20-year-old Tang Zi Liang, and front seat passenger Isabelle Tay, 18, were taken to Changi General Hospital. Both were conscious and injured.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said its officers had to use hydraulic tools to rescue the driver who was trapped in his seat. He is understood to have serious injuries but is in stable condition.
Tang, a part-time DJ and student at RP, has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. Investigations are ongoing.
He was believed to be sending the girls home after a night out at Clarke Quay when the accident occurred. According to Tay, the car was going at 120km/h when it skidded and slammed into a tree. Both Phoe and Lo were flung out of the car.
“It was a horrible and tragic accident, and even worse sight to have seen and not be able to do anything about. May these beautiful girls RIP,” she wrote on Facebook.
