In the Ministerial Statement on National Service Defaulters, Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean stated: "Mr Speaker, Sir, National Service remains critical for our national survival. Singaporeans serve willingly out of a sense of duty, and also a sense that the system is fair. Every citizen does his part, and nobody can dodge his responsibility to serve without severe legal and social sanctions. The Government will strenuously uphold the National Service system, and preserve its fairness and equity. This is essential to maintain the commitment that Singaporeans have shown over four decades of National Service."

According to Teo Chee Hean,"Melvyn Tan left Singapore at age 12 in 1969 to study music at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England. In 1974, when he was 17, he won a Foundation Scholarship, jointly funded by the Straits Times Press, Nanyang Siang Pau and the Lee Foundation, to further his music studies at the Royal College of Music. As the course would take him beyond the enlistment age of 18, he applied for and was granted deferment from National Service for three years, after his parents furnished a bond of $30,000.

However, Melvyn Tan failed to return after his deferment period ended. Instead, he requested further deferment to pursue a Masters degree in music. The request was rejected, as we did not allow further deferment for postgraduate studies. When Melvyn Tan failed to enlist for full-time National Service after his deferment period was over and his exit permit had expired, the bond his parents furnished was forfeited and he was gazetted as an NS defaulter."

The officer in charge of giving Patrick Tan second deferment should be investigated and questioned for reasons to allow this! What is the criteria for this and there must be transparency for such decision. If not, this is corruption in disguise of curry favour.

Ministers who enjoyed such favourable treatment will of course claims that there is no corruption as they never asked for such preferential treatment, but the official who gave these preferential treatment to curry favour should be sack for practising covert corruption! Civil servants are not suppose to accept gifts/money from the public as it will leads to corrupted practice. This preferential curry favour practice is also one of them. If these favouritism practice were discovered in Taiwan, both will be asked to resign! Instead, we have both promoted! One maybe to higher ranking in SAF, the other to President. What a funny country Singapore is.

Why is Mindef keeping so quiet with no clarifications.

Re: Two Tans, Two Different treatments - Two Nations, Two Peoples for Melvin & Patri

MINDEF did mumble something like 'Patrick Tan served his National Service obligations according to policy guidelines.'

Then again, during the Select Committee Hearing on the Law Society Amendment Bill back in 1987, Francis Seow was accused by LKY of being in financial embarrassment while he was in government service which FS denied. LKY then pointed to the fact that FS had taken a housing loan and that that amounted such embarrassment. FS said (rightly) that a housing loan from a bank is approved indebtedness that is backed by collateral and suggested that LKY didn't know what he was talking about.

LKY then called a civil servant from PSC to take the stand and asked him if FS's loan amounted to financial embarrassment. The civil servant hesitated. LKY raised his voice and asked to the effect, 'In your professional judgment, is it or is it not financial embarrassment?'

Almost choking back, the civil servant said, 'yes.'

Why is Mindef keeping so quiet with no clarifications.

If someone starts digging I'm sure they will find many embarrassments in the Lee household:rolleyes:

For example, as one of the richest man in Spore, why isn't he paying income tax:confused:

I don't know if he pays income tax personally but I know his son LHL abolished estate shortly before his multi-millionnairess wife KGC passed away. How much they have saved could possibly run a calculator into overflow. How much they have hidden by no estate duty reporting requirement? Of course all the ministers, MPs, senior civil servants, banks and big bosses raised no objection as their families will benefit too.

Isn't it public knowledge that the MPs are exempt from paying income tax:confused:

I googled & one of the hits I got on this was the following http://www.yeocheowtong.com/Salaries.html

I think only pension is tax-free. The trouble is if not retired or defeated after two terms and cross age 55, they get both salary and pension. I think there's a difference between batches also. Those from mid 90s onward in first term no more pension. George Yeo was from late 80s batch in first term. Anyway WTF, they keep squeezing public money for themselves lah!

Sinkies are like frogs being slowly boiled to death while laughing at the other frogs for fighting among themselves to jump out of the wonderful "jacuzzi". Sinkies have been brainwashed to believe that subservience to authority is a sign of a civilised society.

Melvin Tan did not apply for a MD-PHD. So simple.

After seeing all the nonsense from the PAP, I have become cynical :o

So unless someone can prove otherwise, I assume the tax free status applies to all the PAP MPs.
From my point of view, there are now a new generation of wannabe PAP MPs e.g. friends & children of the elites, and unlimited amount of greed. Somehow I doubt these people will be satisfied with just being millionaires in the words of Mrs. Goh, "peanuts"
