Two sentenced to jail for hurting man who died of his injuries

SINGAPORE: Two unemployed men were sentenced to jail on Tuesday for hurting another man who later died of his injuries.
Thirty-nine-year-old Redzuan Pupon was handed a 15-month jail term while 44-year-old Terrence Goh Chye Huat was given a 17-month sentence.
Along with 53-year-old Kung Kwai Cheong and 49-year-old Jamsari Yusof, the two accused slapped, punched and kicked 43-year-old Gunasekaran Rengasamy on February 13 last year at around 2am along Geylang Road.
The two accused and Kung were at a coffeeshop at Geylang Road. The victim had joined the three men with another friend.
While the five were talking, Jamsari went over to their table and started accusing the victim of being an untrustworthy person who would frame others.
A fight broke out between the two accused, Jamsari and the victim.
During the assault, Kung passed Jamsari a knife which he used in the attack.
Mr Gunasekaran managed to flee from the scene but later died in hospital.
Goh was also convicted of another charge of holding on to someone else's identity card in the same month.
In sentencing, District Judge Eddy Tham noted that the two men were remanded from February last year.
Having backdated their sentences, he said they have thus finished serving their jail terms.
The judge added that the excesses of drinking can lead to destructive consequences.
Redzuan and Goh are the first of the group to be dealt with.
Kung has been charged with one count of abetting the offence while Jamsari faces the murder charge.
Their cases are ongoing.
For causing hurt, Redzuan and Goh could have been jailed up to two years and fined S$5,000 each.
