SINGAPORE: Mindef has confimed that two full-time National Servicemen from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) were assaulted during a late-night fishing trip in Perth on Saturday.
According to a Mindef statement, the two men, aged 19 and 20, were fishing at a river near Ascot Waters, a suburb of Perth, when they were assaulted by a group of men at about 4am (Australian local time).
Australian media reports said the two men were attacked by a group of about seven to 10 men in their late teens, who are armed with an iron bar and empty beer bottles.
The group also used the Singaporeans' fishing rods in their attack, and demanded their wallets.
The fight had allegedly ensued after one of the group members asked the Singaporeans for cigarettes.
Both servicemen were sent to the Royal Perth Hospital in an ambulance.
They sustained injuries which required stitches and were given medical treatment.
They were discharged and their next-of-kin were informed of the incident on the same day.
Mindef added that the RSAF detachment in the RAAF Base Pearce in Perth is assisting the Australian authorities in the investigations.
One of the reports of the attack can be read here.
