SINGAPORE: Police have arrested two people in separate cases for involvement in loansharking activities.

In the first case, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested a 19-year-old girl in the vicinity of Hougang Avenue 9.

The arrest took place on Thursday at about 6.45 pm.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had given away her ATM card and PIN to a loansharking syndicate to facilitate the business of unlicensed moneylending.

Later that same day at about 8.05pm, officers conducted a check on a 37-year-old man in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. They discovered that he had seven mobile phone invoices dated on the same day.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had given away his ATM card and PIN to a loansharking syndicate. He had also helped the loansharking syndicate to buy mobile phones to facilitate the business of unlicensed moneylending.

Investigations against both suspects are on-going.

First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the carrying on of the business of an unlicensed moneylender may be fined a minimum of S$30,000, be jailed for a term not exceeding four years and shall also be liable for caning. - CNA/ac
