SINGAPORE - The two men whose MRT brawl was caught on video were charged on Wednesday.

Contractor Teeng Kok Yong, 40, is accused of kicking 50-year-old Ng Cheng Kiat twice in the leg while they were on a train travelling between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang stations at about 11.40pm on Jan 11. Odd-job worker Ng allegedly grabbed Teeng's body and punched him in the face.

The video of the fight has received more than 2,000 views on YouTube.

It had also been shared about 2,500 times on Facebook by Tuesday night.

In the video, the two men can be seen throwing kicks and punches at each other and exchanging expletives in Hokkien.

They can also be seen wrestling each other to the ground before a commuter eventually steps in to separate them.

The two men were arrested on Monday in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9. If convicted, they could each be jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $5,000.

Teeng's lawyer Low Hui Hui asked for a four-week adjournment as he had just been briefed. The case will be mentioned again on Feb 19.

Ng, who was not represented, told District Judge Ronald Gwee that he wished to engage a lawyer.

He will be back in court on Jan 29.

SINGAPORE: An odd-job worker who was captured in a video fighting with another man on an SMRT train was fined $2,500 in court on Wednesday.

Ng Cheng Kiat, 50, admitted to one charge of affray with 40-year-old Teeng Kok Yong.

The incident took place on 11 January 11 2014 at about 11.40pm while the train was travelling between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang MRT stations.

Ng had grabbed Teeng's body and punched him in the face.

In seeking for leniency, Ng, who was unrepresented, said his wife had just gone for an operation and is on medical leave.

He had faced a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Teeng, who is also facing a similar charge, will have his case heard next month. - CNA/de
