Two arrested for suspected loansharking activities

SINGAPORE - Police arrested two men, aged 18 and 27, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities on Saturday, Sept 8.
A resident spotted the duo behaving suspiciously along the 12th floor common corridor of a block at Ubi Avenue 1 and alerted the police.
Officers from Bedok Police Division detained both men and three cans of paint, two black markers and one mobile phone with debtor's records, were found on them.
The items were seized for investigations.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the pair intended to scrawl loanshark-related graffiti at the staircase landing and splash paint at one of the units.
Both suspects will be charged in court for loanshark harassment.
Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000.
They will also face a maximum jail term of five years and six strokes of the cane.
