Twenty-nine arrested over Sogo rally

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested 29 people over a protest rally in front of the Sogo shopping centre on Saturday.

The detainees are being held at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters in Jalan Hang Tuah and face charges under Section 143 of the Penal Code for taking part in an unlawful assembly. The offence carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years.

They are also being investigated for allegedly taking part in “activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy”, said police.

KL police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said a total of 23 men and six women were arrested.

“Those that were arrested will be brought to court to be remanded to facilitate investigations. The police acted professionally and in accordance with the law in dealing with the rally,” he said in a statement.

Chaos unfolded after police began arresting participants moments after the rally began in front of the Sogo shopping centre at 2pm.
Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang and Simpang Pulai assemblyman Tan Kar Hing were among those arrested.

Three arrested for plans to stage rally

KUALA LUMPUR: Three individuals have been arrested in connection with activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy, said City deputy chief Deputy Comm Datuk Law Hong Soon.

Student activist Adam Adli and Suaram coordinator Syukri Razab were detained at the entrance of the Dang Wangi police headquarters at around 4pm Friday.

They were at the station to meet Dang Wangi police over their plans to stage a protest outside Sogo shopping centre to call for the Prime Minister’s resignation.

DCP Law said police have also detained Bersih 2.0 secretariat member Mandeep Singh after he was summoned for questioning at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on Friday evening.

The three individuals will be investigated under Section 124 of the Penal Code.

DCP Law warned the public not to participate in a planned illegal rally organised by Demi Malaysia and a few other non-governmental organisations in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

"We must keep the peace in city and hold the rule of law. Action will be taken accordingly against those who break the law. We are colour-blind.

"We are not threatening anyone. We are just enforcing the law of the land," he said.

DCP Law also reminded the public to not spread rumours that could jeopardise public order and said those found guilty of the offence can be arrested under Section 505 of the Penal Code.

In an unrelated matter, DCP Law urged people not to speculate on whether police had raided Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail's house on Saturday morning.

"Don't speculate. It's not good and healthy for the society.

"If it is true, we will inform you. You wouldn't have to ask," he told reporters at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Saturday.
