I see two things clearly here. One is the natural cycle of birth, growth, plateau and then decline/death. The other is the corrupting influence of power.

Even a political party like the PAP is not immune to this natural life cycle. When you've difficulties attracting good, talented people with a heart to serve, then your decline starts. And it's a no brainer why there're difficulties -- when there's no longer trust that you care about the people. Politics are all about people and when you can't attract new blood, you'll die soon.

Having said that, some die faster than others, from the corrupting influence of power. Power is sexy and seductive and if you're not careful, becomes addictive. You like it so much that you'll do anything and everything to hold on to it. You start to allow personal interests to influence your decision making, hurting the people along the way. You may not have the intent to hurt the people, but you're so consumed in pursuing your own political agenda that you no longer care. You become indifferent to the needs of the people. And when this happens, it will hasten the decline of a political party.

And in life, your just can't escape these two things. It will happen.

yes it comes in cycles but the fundamentals are still there. pap is losing it while wp is rising. and wp is rising because it has the image that it is like the pap of old.

inbreeding in nature results in the offspring getting higher chances of having their recessive genes showing up, usually detrimental, as seen in many pedigree dogs, as well as the fast declining cheetah population.
political inbreeding... we all have seen how the Egyptian Dynasties crumbled, how Chinese Dynasties crumbled... good to note, the crumbling of any political party is NOT equivalent to the crumbling of a nation :biggrin::biggrin:
MAJULAH, SINGAPURA, MAJULAH!!!

It is so encouraging to hear grounded comments from the likes of zihau and many others in this thread and others.

all go to show GMS does not have a monopoly on patriotism and sincerity.

In contrast to their political hard-nosed comments, GMS's convulated postulations look hollow, theoretician and distinctively smug and academic.

Goes to show many may grasp all the facts yet never derived the hard truths because they interpret through their eccentric esoteric lens.

What is most striking is that then being physically in the arena as a candidate, getting their hands dirtied can get them nowhere. GMS is not alone, before him, the wong hon toys, sin kek tongs, seow kee lengs etc etc. Lives spent pursuing , but lack the guile and political know-how to get there. All they can is console thmselves it was a worthy cause and the journey is the reward.

All the more, LTK comes across as a deep resolute serious minded politician who can build and execute strategies as opposed to bleeding heart (public-spirited no less) liberals with 2nd class honors in econs beating their breasts and thinking too highly of their pretty 'political commentary'.

For young aspirants to Parliamentary office, the GMS case study is highly instructive.

with the formation of GRCs in the late 80s, it seemed as though the opposition had no chance of clearing the hurdle. times have indeed changed, starting with the fall of Aljunied GRC, we could be seeing a trend of more GRCs turning into opposition wards. the tides have changed!:biggrin::biggrin:

The main reason given for having GRC has always been to ensure adequate minority representation in parliament.
The case of Jurong GRC is food for thought for the "reason for GRC".
This GRC is helmed by a male Indian ministar (Tharman), a female Malay ministar of state (Halimah) and the rest of the team consists of 3 male Chinese newbies,
none of whom is familiar to most of us, although I know one of the chaps is former ministar Lee Yock Suan's son.
Given the way Aljunied was taken by having 3 powerhouse opposition members in it, perhaps the day where they revert back to all SMCs is not far away......................................

bro,
in that case, SMC is a rather remote possibility. even as our Kapitan Goh nailed Michael Palmer on his SMC bid, it proved that whether the candidate is a minority or not, the PAP would argue that GRC could act as a safeguard at the very most. economics of scales as a back up.
