SINGAPORE: Star Zest Tuition Agency on Wednesday (June 4) became the first company to be charged with breaching the Do Not Call Registry requirements under the Personal Data Protection Act.

The agency received 37 charges for the sending of unsolicited telemarketing messages to local telephone numbers registered with the Do Not Call Registry. This was after many complaints made by the public, according to a media statement by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) on May 23.

The tuition agency's director, Law Han Wei, similarly faces 37 charges for authorising the sending of the unsolicited messages.

Law, who was representing the company and himself, said he intends to plead guilty to the charges. The case will next be mentioned on July 2. - CNA/kk
