A DISTRICT court asked for a probation and reformative training report on three young men who had caused the death of a teenage student in January. This was despite the prosecution's exhortations that the offence was 'so serious, so heinous' that only jail and caning would be appropriate for Kan Zhan Peng, 19, Joshua Leong Wei Jun and Liu Wing Sing, both 20. The court heard that Kan, Leong, Liu and another friend Lee Chang Feng, 21, were involved in a fight in the early hours of Jan 3 after an alleged staring incident. While his mates managed to escape, Siah Wui Xiang, an ITE student, 18, who was in the other group, was caught. He was kicked by the gang and fell, hitting his head against a road kerb. He died four days later of head injuries at the Singapore General Hospital. All three were ordered to be remanded until the next hearing on Nov 13 when the pre-sentence report would be presented. The trial of the other alleged accomplice, Lee, will be heard on Monday.
