PM Lee
PM Lee has spoken firmly on the national strategy of growth for Singapore, and in the process, affirmed the government’s commitment to the pro-foreigner and open-economy mode that has been the hallmark of his government.
There is no doubt Singapore’s success owes much to its open economy because its survival was dependent on foreign trade and investment. This has been Singapore’s economic strategy since independence and has served us well.
There are many elements that can power growth. Ask the economic student the question on factors of production required for growth and he will faithfully quote you labour, capital, labour.
The Singapore government has subscribed to the belief that increasing the foreign component of labour in the economic growth equation will power Singapore’s economy forward.
However the over-reliance on foreign labour input has significant implications for our society and nationhood and Singaporeans have been vocal in their opinions against this policy. The overcrowding has affected our infrastructure, housing prices and employment for Singaporeans.
During the General Election 2011, Prime Minister Lee has, during his Fullerton lunch-time rally, apologized to the voters about the mistakes of his administration. Many had in mind he was referring to the pro-foreigners economic strategy that has resulted in much woes for the locals.
They had hoped for a change in the paradigm of policy-makers, and hoped the government will emphasize the importance of Singaporeans in the growth strategy.
They were proven wrong by PM Lee’s latest speech.
The speech is significant because it showed there will be no change in the government’s pro-foreigner economic strategy. The pace of immigration will continue and Singaporeans should learn to accept the new immigrants even if this meant significant wear on the society cohesion, infrastructure and inflate the asset process further.
This is a slam of the door on the voices clamoring for a shift in the official attitude, opting for enhanced consideration for Singaporeans.
The speech is also a disregard to the fundamental concerns of Singaporeans with regard to the quality of living. The pursuit for economic growth remains relentless, and money making – the sole obsession of the government.
With the ever-growing sentiments of discontent, coupled with the official position as enunciated by PM Lee, there can only be one outcome – the inevitable clash of two opposing forces in this country, signifying further rift in our society.
