traditional western culture vs new western culture

I am not exactly sure how to call the new western culture, you know the ones everyone should be familiar with gratuitous sex and violence. Extreme liberalism that includes stuff like sex with animals and other sexual practices like piss drinking etc published in magazines.

These sort of things would never be accepted in this country that has tons of western influence. Yet do you know that the west used to be conservative and in some places still are? That's why i find it sort of well ironical i guess whenever ppl call bad influence western influence.

I guess most of this degenerate culture comes from the US which is in the west. Firstly the US is a is a melting pot of cultures, hence i believe not all of this degeneracy comes from european influence but add in african culture, jewish, hispanic etc but i believe that european influence gives a face to this degeneracy. After all when you say american the first thing that comes to most ppl's minds are ang mohs and 2ndly blacks but mostly whites.


Okay i believe that during the 70's i believe america was going through some cultural revolution, like they were becoming super liberal. Actually western civilization has had a number of cultural revolutions. Need some research on it.

If some of you have more knowledge in these areas pls feel free to add on or correct me.

1. Do you feel that so-called western influence like MTV, lady gaga, hip hop etc helps to erode traditional asian values?

2. From another perspective could you say that western civilization managed to evolve earlier than other civilzations and they had their own cultural revolutions that made them more liberal and hence more cool? That is to say that asian countries still live in the 1950s sort of mindset, true youngsters listen to music, drink and smoke etc but they are not truly liberal unlike ppl in the west.

3: Without western influence, if let's say USA did not exist would countries like china have developed their own type of liberalism? Would a form of asian punk, hip hop, deliquency have developed in asian countries?

4: Do you think it's fair to blame the west on so called erosion of asian traditions even though it's true that much of it comes from the west like mac donalds, hip hop, punk, porn, gay rights etc. After all cultures all over the world are evolving and changing.

New western influences like MTV actually erode their original western culture which is strongly based on Christianity. Christianity actually fits in very well with Democracy and Capitalism.

I don't see that happening in China but in other outlets like Taiwan or Hongkong.

China is actually very open when it comes to speech. You can say anything except criticizing the CCP directly or talk about human rights.

The only problem with China is that the state monopolize all the media. When you have a monopoly, there is very weak innovation because there is no impetus to create more value.

Not all Western people are liberal. They have a liberal suffrage (voting) system and an innovation market that is liberal. If you want to talk about something, you got to back it up with facts or beef ($). Many of them are very traditional especially those pious ones with strong religious background.

They are only liberal if it meets their interests (money, religion, rights). You can talk about anything if their own sets of criteria are met.

I think useful evolution is more important than early evolution. Asia should take it slow and decide what they want because it simply does not have the jurisdictional system to handle all the issues to deal with rapid social changes.

These were all thought up by western writers to show the degeneracy of some of their ppl living in the west. The so called "fall of western civilisation" actually describes nothing more than the loss of influence of Christianity over the general population.

The church used to have a big influence on society's norms and christian teachings were used to define the boundaries of what was decent behaviour and what wasn't.

Up to the 50s and early 60s, many hotels in the US would cast disdain on couples sharing a room unless they were married. The church of yesteryear could probably put the Taleban to shame. :p

Please threadstarter, you think Western culture is less morally upright than Asian culture? The biggest joke is in Singapore moral education is taught using Malay/Chinese/Tamil and not English, as if these cultures are more decent.

Ask yourself in which culture -- Chinese or British -- are there no human rights, no democracy, no respect for human lives? Which country has epidemic levels of corruption, rudeness, spitting on floor, crime, prostitution? I've never been able to fully accept "Eastern" or "Western" definitions of culture, or values mainly because the whole world can be seen to be a melting pot, albeit varying. This East vs. West thing or Old West vs. New West thing is too simplistic in itself. Even the advance West (as opposed to the backward West - ex-Warsaw pact countries) still debates itself on the quickly erosion of their "traditional values."

All these thanks to Pop Culture and money making. And nowadays, nobody wants to argue against capitalism. Even Sg build MBS!!!

1. No. They add to it.

2. No. But the western countries (since the Age of Englightenment) were more ready to accept changes. Technologically, and Socially.

3. Probably. The French Revolution would have started the ball rolling. It did so for the Yankees too.

4. No. Eastern countries welcome MacDonald's and Hip Hop - because they make money. Even in the West, gay lifestyle was only recently embraced because the gays now get married, congregate at cafes and discos, and spend money. Money talks. Money makes the world go round.

Er, having said that, I do not agree with a lot of the new stuff. Just an old fashioned man - but an open mind.
