Already with the Prius the best selling hybrid-engine vehicle, Toyota has upped the ante with the announcement of the Mirai, and with worsening pollution seen in big countries like China (look at Beijing's sky!), conscious people will be looking at less pollutive vehicles. Am already considering a hybrid engine for my next vehicle, and with hydrogen fuel cell ones, it gives us consumers more options.

Toyota's Mirai gives a glimpse to the future

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor recently unveiled the world's first commercial fuel cell vehicle. Now comes the big wait -- for other companies to come up with some new technology of their own and for the necessary infrastructure to be put in place.
At the end of the wait, Toyota hopes, the hydrogen society will bloom.
The Mirai debuted in mid-December. The name means future in Japanese. The car runs on electricity generated by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It emits no carbon dioxide, though it drips some water.
Shortly before the car's official release, a man in his 30s gave one a test drive. "They were saying it would cost 100 million yen ($851,500) to buy a fuel cell vehicle until just a few years ago," the driver said. "So I thought [a fuel cell car] would be way beyond my reach."
The Mirai does not cost 100 million yen. After a government subsidy, the price is around 5.2 million yen.
"Things don't move forward if we just sit around and wait for a long time," said Mitsuhisa Kato, executive vice president of Toyota. That is why Toyota went ahead with the Mirai's release despite the lack of hydrogen filling stations. It is also why the carmaker is offering to license its fuel cell-related patents for free. It wants its rivals and other industries to join the hydrogen party.
Honda Motor plans to launch a fuel cell vehicle in fiscal 2015, which begins in less than three months.
For consumers, this will mean another choice. For businesses, it will mean new opportunities to develop hydrogen-related parts, materials and equipment -- and start new undertakings.
What kind of materials? Consider that the Mirai uses carbon paper hundreds of microns thick. It is the electrode's base material. The electrode is part of the power generator, or in the Mirai's case, the fuel cell stack. The material helps increase power generation efficiency.
Made of carbon fiber, the paper is supplied by Toray Industries. "Carbon fiber is our strategic product," said Akihiro Nikkaku, president of Toray Industries. "We will respond to the needs of automakers."
Meanwhile, Toyota Boshoku has used its high-precision stamping technology to produce a sheet-shaped part made from titanium. The part, the separator, is also used in the fuel cell stack. As you can see, these stacks are prompting companies to improve their technologies.
Tokyo Gas in December opened Japan's first commercial hydrogen station, in Tokyo's Nerima Ward. Also in Tokyo, JX Nippon Oil & Energy is opening a hydrogen station in Hachioji this month and another in Suginami Ward next month. The Tokyo Metropolitan government aims to set up hydrogen stations at 80 locations by partnering with the private sector.
Suppose these stations were set up more or less equidistant from one another. If this were the case, drivers of fuel cell vehicles would be able to find a filling station in about 10 minutes.
 
the problem is not the car technologies as Honda already test with hydrogen fuelled car at least in California around 6-7 years ago with a working prototype car. the main problem is building infrastructures to house hydrogen safely and new refuelling stations for the cars. it should be a good technology as only H2O is produce from the exhaust.

at the minimum, it will stop the nickel mining which is very damaging to the environment that is use to produce the batteries use in the stupid Toyota Prius.
 
Yup. It is now up to countries to install hydrogen filling stations. We'll have to watch how this develops in large countries like China and USA. Countries with a much smaller market will have to go with the flow of trends there. I read too that Honda displayed their hydrogen fuel cell car at the Detroit auto show.

With falling petroleum prices the americans are going back to gas guzzlers. Must wait for gas prices to increase again before these alternate technologies take off.
 
The oil cartels will not be very happy with this, at least the hybrids still use some gasoline.

I don't know if higher prices will prevent people from driving gasoline powered cars, people somehow find the money. Look at the cost of cars in Singapore, and look at the number of "pricier" models compared with "working class" models. Even in the States, SUVs and high-powered cars are preferred by those who can afford them. It is the pollution caused by gasoline cars that needs to be tackled (besides flue gases from smokestacks and factory chimneys.) Electric and fuel-cell cars are the available choices now, but the convenience of gasoline cars still outweigh the operating hassles restricted by the lack/absence of infrastructure needed for other modes. It does not look like there is a shortage of gasoline, its is more man-made than actual, seemingly.

That state really needs to be given credit for their action in fighting pollution. It was their initiative during the 70s/80s that California brought tougher emission standards to road vehicles and killed the two-stoke engine for motorcycles in the USA (I rode one). I think Singapore attempted to follow that path, but it was impossible to stop all those little motorbikes coming in from Johor, and so the authorities simply forgot the idea.
