A hip-hop promoter convicted in a New York City drug trafficking case has been sentenced to life in prison.

James Rosemond, known as Jimmy Henchman, received the sentence on Friday in federal court in Brooklyn.

A jury found Rosemond guilty last year at a trial in which prosecutors accused him of running a lucrative drug ring.

They said the ring smuggled cocaine in music equipment cases slathered with mustard to throw off drug-sniffing dogs.

Federal judge John Gleeson said: “You’re the kingpin. Not all kingpins necessarily deserve a life sentence yet you certainly do.”

Brooklyn US attorney Loretta Lynch said: “His image as a music impresario was a cover for the real Jimmy Rosemond, a thug in a suit.”

Lawyers for the 48-year-old Rosemond said he was framed.

Rosemond still faces separate charges in Manhattan alleging he arranged a murder as payback for an assault on his son.

Rosemond, who once owned penthouses in Brooklyn & Los Angeles, forfeited $10m (£6.1m) to the government as the illicit proceeds of his drug dealing.

His company’s website says he was behind such hits as Salt-N-Pepa’s Shoop & represented The Game & Sean Kingston.
