according to Time Magazine Asia Edition, one of the top 100 most influential people in the world today is Professor Andrew Ng from Stanford University.
same guy whom co-founded coursera-dot-org; this is the type of talent whom we need, last noted he stay in Singapore in his younger days, graduated from RI in 92... and what on Earth happened?

This is from wikipedia:

"Ng was born in the United Kingdom in 1976 and spent time in Hong Kong and Singapore.[1] He later graduated from Raffles Institution in Singapore as the class of 1992 to receive his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the class of 1997. Then, he attained his master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston as the class of 1998 and received his PhD from University of California, Berkeley in 2002. He started working at Stanford University during that year; he currently lives in Palo Alto, California"

Not likely that he would have chosen to stay on in SG anyway.

But that's not really the point. For years now, the system has never allowed people like these to thrive.
It prefers those who guaiguai goes through the system and ultimately rewards those who have the necessary academic achievements and do/say the "right" things, or for that matter, don't do/say the "wrong" things.

There is one particular person who is primarily responsible for such a state of affairs in SG, the fact that someone like Zorro is supposed to be held in high esteem, whereas someone like Andrew is being influential to the world elsewhere.

This is a result of insisting on having things in a certain way as dictated by one person including those close to him, as well as focusing on people more than topics and issues. What I mean by the last part is that as long as you agree with the person in charge and do what he says and toe his line, you will thrive. This type of system does not allow diversity, creativity, innovation or free speech/thought. In fact, it stinks.

The national population secretariat has a lot to answer for. Namely why can't we keep outstanding personalities like prof ng. Instead we get a smattering of rich blokes who are only interested in our tax haven facilities.

And because we don't keep all the real talents we have to make up the shortfall by importing all the 3rd and 4th rate FTs.

then the next question is: if Prof Andrew Ng had remained in Singapore, would he be as successful as he is now?

No.

And the few people who succeeded in Singapore succeeded despite the system, rather than because of the system.

This system manufactures yes-men and docile, obedient workers who can't see beyond the next paycheck.

Do you think those cockroaches in white care?
As long as sinkies are stupid to vote and vote them in so they can continue the screwing and fucking of sinkies to get the 800++ billions to smear of shit on sole of shoe LKY Stinkapore sovereign funds, and that they can get a fucking cut of that $$$$ , they live in heaven on earth.

Why should they care for Sinkies as they felt sinkies are so fucking stupid to elect them.

WHY SHOULD THEY RESPECT STUPID SINKIES?????

did Prof Andrew Ng take A-levels in Singapore?

Can't tell from the wikipedia entry.
At that time, RI didn't have the integrated programme yet, which allows students to skip Os and take As.
So he must have taken Os at RI.
Could have studied pre U in USA.

His only (tenuous) connection with Singapore is that he attended RI. To embellish the Singapore 'connection' any further, as I'm sure some of the Sinkie MSM would like to do, is bordering on fraud.

Singapore was just a stepping stone for him (just like for many FT who are already here).

say Prof Andrew isn't any FT: Dr Ronald Ng, Prof Andrew's dad, lives in Singapore and had served NS like the rest of us? so the mystery deepens...

and who's complaining that the country lacks creativity, entrepreneurship, innovative people???
