Netizens unimpressed by Tony Tan’s ‘heroic wayang’ to ’save’ injured child
The desperate, disgraceful and disgusting attempt of the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) to lend a hand to its former chairman and PAP-endorsed presidential hopeful Dr Tony Tan in its faltering election campaign by a heavy barrage of propaganda in recent days has backfired spectacularly.
Yesterday, the Sunday Times and Lianhe Zaobao published a large photo of Dr Tony Tan bending down to ‘attend’ to a child laying on the ground:
Dr Tony Tan was having a stroll with his wife in a park at Woodlands when they coincidentally ‘chanced’ upon the child who reportedly fell and injured his arm. For some strange reason, SPH journalists also ‘happened’ to be in the vicinity to take the photo.
The ‘photo-op’ did not go down too well with netizens with many of them accusing SPH of ’staging’ the ‘wayang’ to promote Dr Tony Tan in order to give him a head-start in his election campaign. Many also thought the incident was not news-worthy at all.
Terence Emeritus posted his disdain on TR Facebook:
“Many of us have helped strangers when there’s a need. Is there even a need to publicise this ??? Is this even something extraordinary!?! Seriously.”
Francesca Klass chastised Dr Tan for seeking unnecessary ‘attention’:
“This is such a fake scenario… seems like Dr Tan’s rather desperate for public attention. Does he look concerned or tickled? He’s even smiling… “
Hazwan Marican felt insulted:
“Why when the boy fall, then just nice got cameraman and tony tan there? Think carefully guys! SPH think we singaporeans are dumb nuts.”
Mason Lim concurred:
“It’s just *too* coincidental to have a professional photographer on the spot, don’t you think? And the photo definitely doesn’t look like it was taken with a typical digital camera.”
Diane Tay was equally unimpressed:
“This is so fake..i mean anyone who has a heart will check on the boy, this one also need to take the picture and put on the news? so if i am on the spot and go and help the boy, i also need to be on the news is it? all just wayang…i dun see the opposition need to do tat at all….this is all the more i wont vote for TT at all…all wayang…for show only…”
Muhamad Noor criticized Dr Tan for not putting the boy in a recovery position:
“is TT a certified first aider?? if yes, then he sud know that the boy sud be put in a recovery position so tt his tongue will not block this airway. taking a tissue to clean the boy’s saliva will not do any good. if TT is not a first aider, then why is he endangering tt boy’s life??tt boy cud have a heart attack n TT only used a tissue to wipe his saliva!!! and look at his position… all first aider automatically face 90 deg to the victim, not at some angle for photo shoot. i think he wud have dine a better job by calling the ambulance.”
With anti-PAP sentiments at an all-time high, Dr Tony Tan is facing an uphill task convincing young IT-savvy Singaporeans to support him in his presidential bid.
The state media’s clumsy attempts to ’sell’ Dr Tony Tan to disgruntled Singaporeans is going only to peeved more voters off. Judging from present circumstances, it is unlikely that the PAP-controlled PEC will grant a Certificate of Eligibility to Singaporeans’ preferred candidate Mr Tan Jee Say to contest in the presidential election.
