[TD="class: msgtxt"]Foolish to build MRT now: Tony Tan

The Straits Times, 17 December 1981, Page 19

the construction industry has become overheated and if singapore were to be foolish enough to build its proposed mass rapid transit (MRT) system now, it will find itself in trouble.

This warning was sounded by Dr Tony Tan at a forum on economic affairs at the NUS last friday.

1981 - Minister for Trade and Industry

[TD="class: msgtxt"] History had spoken and proven Mr Ong Teng Chong is far superior than Tony Tan,
Ong Teng Chong's first political appointment came just three years later when he was made Senior Minister of State for Communications. At that time, Ong pushed for the development of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT), the largest construction project in Singapore's history.
Mr Ong's firm belief in the MRT system clearly demonstrated his vision in that the system would be a new dimension in urban mobility. It has to be noted that there have been tough resistance to the MRT system due to the large capital involved. And the existing cheaper mode of transport (via the bus system) was strongly proposed as an alternative to the MRT system.

b) Conviction - Despite facing opposition from his Cabinet colleagues, Mr Ong, as Communications Minister persevered and sought to convince his colleagues of the advantages of having a MRT system. Mr Ong was indeed a man of conviction with his beliefs held firmly

Oil price shot up in 1979 and we had very high inflation in 1979-1981.
Throwing tons of money into the economy may not be a good thing.

We can only speculate. TT comes from moneyed family with business tentacles all over the place. Why would a old man come back from comfortable retirement in UK and live in a gold-fish bowl at the Istana, cutting ribbons and paid millions tax free to be a mute? Is it pure concern for our welfare? To me, its more likely a deal struck with the devil himself. He will win when votes are split. A black day for Singapore.
