Tony Tan attacks Tan Cheng Bock for ‘fear-mongering’
August 25th, 2011 | Author: Temasek Review
PAP-endorsed presidential candidate Tony Tan has lashed out at
fellow candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock for mischievous ‘fear-mongering’.
Dr Tan Cheng Bock had earlier told the state media that “many people
had come up to him to say they really wanted to support him but were too afraid to”:
“Some of the people who spoke to me said ‘Doc, sorry I cannot help you (in)
this election. I am frightened, I am worried if I speak too much,
I will be victimised (and) penalised’,” he said.
Responding to queries from reporters, Dr Tony Tan said:
“This kind of fear-mongering is very mischievous. The last GE (General Election)
has shown that Singaporeans are confident enough to express their own views.
I don’t think any Singaporean could seriously believe that they will suffer for
supporting another candidate.”
The PAP camp is deeply split between Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock with
the latter reportedly commanding more support from the PAP grassroots.
Dr Tan Cheng Bock claimed that many ex-PAP MPs and members have voiced
their support for him in private with a former Malay MP stepping forward
to endorse him publicly.
While he has been stressing his ‘independence’ from the PAP,
Dr Tan Cheng Bock was a member of its powerful CEC for 19 years where he
was involved in many decision-making processes concerning Singapore.
