Dhaka, Apr 9 (UNB) - Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam on Monday assured his Bangladesh counterpart of his country’s increased support for the development of Bangladesh.
The assurance came when President Zillur Rahman, now in Singapore for medical checkup, met Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam at his Presidential Palace, according to a message received here.
Terming Bangladesh a neighboring country, President Keng Yam said Singapore has been closely working with Bangladesh in international forums.
President Keng Yam emphasised organising ‘investment seminars’ in Singapore to increase their investment in Bangladesh. “Bangladesh is making rapid progress,” he said.
Keng Yam said Singapore is keen to provide support for the infrastructural development, particularly building a water treatment centre in Bangladesh.
He lauded Bangladesh for its highest contributions to the UN Peacekeeping Mission.
The two countries have been working together in ensuring security, defence and curbing terrorism, and expressed his hope that the cooperative relations would be further extended and deepened in the days to come, he added.
The Singaporean President welcomed the President of Bangladesh and his delegation, and thanked them for visiting the Presidential Palace.
During the hour-long meeting, President Zillur recalled that Singapore was the first among the South East Asian countries that recognised Bangladesh after its Liberation War in 1971.
He expressed gratitude to the President and the government of Singapore for their cooperation for the last four decades for the development of Bangladesh.
Zillur noted that around 500,000 Bangladeshis have been working in Singapore and requested his counterpart to recruit more people from Bangladesh in the future.
President Zillur urged the Singapore government to import world-class Bangladeshi products, including readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, jute and jute goods, leather and leather goods at competitive prices.
As President Zillur invited Dr Tony Tan Keng to visit Bangladesh, Dr Tony Tan Keng said will visit Bangladesh at his convenient time.
Nazmul Hasan MP, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Singapore Kamrul Hasan and Singaporean High Commissioner to Bangladesh Chan Heng Wing and Secretaries to the President’s Office were, among others, present
