The Oscar-winning actor revealed to David Letterman that his blood sugar levels have been high since he was 36, but he has recently "graduated'' to Type 2 diabetes.

Hanks, who is 57, said his doctor had told him that if he weighed the same as he weighed in high school he would "be completely healthy", something the actor dismissed as impossible.

During his career Hanks has transformed his body to play characters authentically.

In the 1992 film A League of Their Own he deliberately put on 30 pounds to play a baseball coach.

When he starred in Cast Away in 2000 he lost 50 pounds to make himself believable as a man stuck on a desert island.

Type 2 can be controlled through diet and exercise.
