The pre-dominant anti-PAP political blog in Singapore’s blogosphere The Online Citizen (TOC) is put on “hiatus” sparking off a round of wild speculations among netizens.
The shocking announcement was made yesterday on TOC’s Facebook by its Chief Editor Andrew Loh and was reposted on the site:
“Dear everyone, The team at The Online Citizen will be taking an indefinite break from today. We will make further announcements due course. Thank you. Regards, Andrew Loh, Chief Editor.”
Andrew did not explain the reasons behind the break.
Some of its Facebook fans question if the owners and writers have been called up to “drink kopi” with the Secret Branch while others speculate that it may be shut down temporarily due to financial reasons.
Andrew dismissed them and clarified that they are just on a “break”.
“Hi everyone, we’re just on a break, as we have in previous years. You guys so imaginative lar…” – Andrew.”
Founded in December 2006 by former Workers’ Party Youth leader Andrew Loh and Law undergraduate Choo Zheng Xi, TOC has grown to be one of the staunchest critics of the PAP in cyberspace.
Earlier this year, a PAP supporter lodged a police report against TOC for making “seditious” remarks against PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew.
A month ago, Minister of Community, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan rapped TOC publicly for publishing “irresponsible” articles on the homeless in Singapore without mentioning its name explicitly.
Since its founding in 2006, TOC has never gone on a ”hiatus”. Since it is run by so many columnists, it is befuddling to say the least that the entire team is taking an “indefinite break” at the same time.
There are no immediate comments from Andrew, Zheng Xi or other members of the TOC team so far which used to include Reform Party Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam, Workers’ Party Youth leader Gerald Giam and former NTUC INCOME Chief Tan Kin Lian.
