Kin Lian: I will use veto on reserves to influence Govt policies
Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian has promised to use the presidential veto on reserves to influence the government's economic and social policies, if he is elected.
He said on Sunday that if the Government comes to him with a proposal to spend past reserves, he would ask for certain measures that benefitted larger groups of Singaporeans to be put in place before he approves it.
In particular, he would like to see:
policies that take care of the needs of ordinary people, not just that of businesses;
housing grants awarded only to Singaporeans who had served National Service, and not to new citizens who had not; and
policies that help the elderly poor, such as pensions for those over 75.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Whampoa Drive market, Mr Tan said he saw the veto as a 'last resort' and would not use it lightly. 'I don't want to cause difficulty for the people of Singapore by exercising the veto too early. And I hope that would not be necessary,' he said.
However, he made it clear that he expected the Government to consult with the president, so that the president's inputs are taken into consideration.
'I want to use this consultative process to have policies that would reflect what I think Singaporeans want. This is a way to have the influence of the office of the president. Before the proposal for releasing the reserves comes, there should be some consultation.'[/TD]
