Pro-Singaporean leader and presidential hopeful Tan Jee Say said he is contesting for the presidency to serve as a check on the PAP government.
Speaking during a SDP event yesterday, Mr Tan Jee Say said a non-PAP President can provide real and effective checks and balances on the excesses of the PAP Government.
He added that this is particularly important given the result of the GE which saw the opposition getting 40% of the popular vote but only 7% of the seats. PAP’s control over Parliament is virtually absolute:
“They (PAP) can impose any new policy measures as they wish or even change the Constitution and the handful of Opposition MP’s are completely ineffective in stopping them even though they may talk and talk.”
Though there eight WP MPs in parliament including two NCMPs, they have been largely conspicuous by their SILENCE so far.
Mr Tan Jee Say also disagreed with Law Minister Shanmugam’s latest proclaimation that the President can only speak on the ‘advice’ of the Cabinet.
“The mission of the elected President is to provide checks and balances on the Government and the President will not be doing his duty if he does not speak up whenever the Government crosses the line or when the Government fails to deliver on the promises they have made to the people. He has the moral authority to do so as he is directly elected by the people.”
As ordinary Singaporeans throw their support behind the affable, approachable and honorable Mr Tan Jee Say, the public backlash against the PAP-endorsed candidate Tony Tan continues to snowball with a picbadge being started specifically to call for Singaporeans to vote AGAINST him.
