On Friday, doctors at Changi General Hospital (CGH) declared Mr Swenson Tan brain dead. He had lapsed into a coma three weeks ago after being hit by a van.
Yet when it was time to let him go last night, his loved ones refused to accept the outcome.
His mother, Madam Lisa Mah, 54, could be heard yelling at hospital staff for wanting to take him away and wailing for him to wake up. Mr Tan's parents had also earlier made a police report against CGH to keep him alive.
More than 30 friends and family members rallied around Mr Tan in and near his ward on Sunday night, moments before his body was wheeled into the operating theatre by nurses for his organs to be harvested.
Professor Teo Eng Kiong, chairman of the medical board at CGH, told The New Paper that time is crucial in the harvesting of usable organs.
“Organs are usually recovered within 24 hours after the certification of brain death... After the procedure, the body is suitably prepared to be returned to the family, for them to conduct their own funeral rites,” he said.

MOH must commission an independent study or investigation on the entire HOTA practices to make sure that doctors are not pressured or incentivized in any way to declare a person to be brain dead.

The US is full of conspiracy theories and law suits because the lawyers need to be fed.

Nothing is foolproof and there could be instances of abuse but the risk of slipping in the bath tub and cracking your skull is far greater than having your organs harvested while you're still alive.

Then there should be nothing to worry about for an independent commission to snoop around and help to tighten procedures.

We are all layperson and we are not in the shoes of the doctors. So the public cannot be entirely sure of what exactly goes on behind the scene. There are well documented cases of doctors recommending unnecessary procedures and making wrong decisions. So what makes you so sure that everything with regards to HOTA is pure and above board?
